Care, confidence & a chair for everyone.

Ava Zhang · Founder & licensed cosmetologist

At just 16, Ava Zhang is one of Virginia’s youngest licensed cosmetologists and the founder of Cuts for a Cause, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit reimagining beauty as a source of dignity, agency, and belonging.

Ava leads haircutting sessions and cosmetology lessons at shelters throughout the DMV—DC, Maryland, and Virginia—often working for up to seven hours at a time. By serving every age and hair type, she has built partnerships with 5 shelters in Virginia and empowered more than 850 Virginians to date.

Her work is grounded in a simple belief: beauty care can create space for healing, self-expression, and genuine human connection.

Each haircut carries a story

Returning care builds lasting trust.

Through repeated visits, Ava has formed deep connections with clients and created a chair where people can feel heard as well as cared for. A haircut is never treated as a one-time service; it is an opportunity to restore confidence and help someone reclaim how they move through the world.

George · Fauquier Family Shelter

“Coming back to Virginia, I found this shelter. I love having volunteers like you come in and help. It really does make me feel seen and valued. I finally feel like I have some support, you know?”

After losing his leg to an infection while pursuing a music career in Texas, George returned to Virginia without adequate support or funds. His story reflects the value of consistent care and being recognized as a whole person.

A new beginning · Fair Ridge Shelter

“I’ve always struggled with my body image and looks, but this new hair makes me feel more confident than I have ever been.”

After sharing that mistreatment tied to her sexuality and appearance had made it difficult to embrace her identity, a young Latina client asked Ava for a fresh start. Ava shaped a sleek bob around her features, helping her feel prepared and confident for upcoming job interviews.

The circumstances facing many clients are structural. Limited access to resources reinforces cycles of marginalization: people are judged for their appearance while lacking the means to change it. Cuts for a Cause meets immediate grooming needs while challenging the deeper stigma surrounding poverty.

Residents, shelter leaders, clients, and volunteers share what compassionate beauty care can mean in a difficult season.

“We truly need more young and passionate people like you. Thank you so much for cutting my son’s hair. I can finally see his eyes again! It really warmed my heart to see his whole face, and I’m glad our community has someone like you to make something so simple so special.”
